Packing for a backpacking trip sounds easy right? In reality if you don't organize and pack your backpack in order you can spend the day pulling everything out to get that one thing that is at the bottom. You'll want to organize your pack into three sections; bottom, middle, top.
Pack smart and light, and the trail will feel a lot shorter!
Packing your backpack the right way makes hiking easier, safer, and a lot more comfortable. Think of your pack like it has four zones, from bottom to top.
The bottom of your pack is for soft, bulky gear.
Start with your sleeping bag. It makes a soft base for everything else.
Use a stuff sack if you have one, or just stuff it in loose so it fills all the space.
Put your sleeping pad next, if it fits inside your pack.
Use camp clothes or a small pillow to fill any empty spaces.
Some packs have a special sleeping bag compartment with a divider. If you need more space, you can skip using the divider.
✅ Why? Soft items on the bottom act like a cushion and help protect your gear.
This is the most important zone. The middle of your pack, closest to your back, is where the heavy gear goes.
Put these items here:
Tent (body and poles if they fit)
Cooking gear (stove, fuel, pots)
Food you don’t need until camp
Water reservoir (hydration bladder)
Water is very heavy, so keeping it close to your back helps with balance.
Pro Tip:
Fill your water reservoir before you pack your bag. Once your pack is full, it’s very hard to slide it in.
✅ Why? Heavy items close to your back keep your pack from pulling you backward or swinging side to side.
The front of the pack is farther away from your body, so only put light items here.
Good items for this zone:
Extra clothes
Camp towel
Small toiletries
You can also use clothes to pad hard items so they don’t shift around.
✅ Why? Light gear in front keeps your pack balanced and easier to carry.
The top of the pack (including the pack lid, sometimes called the “brain”) is for light items you may need during the day.
Good items to keep here:
First aid kit
Snacks
Rain jacket
Compass or map
Sunscreen
Water filter (if it’s small)
✅ Why? You can grab these items quickly without unpacking your whole bag.
Pro Tip:
If you have a light but bulky item, like a foam sleeping pad, you can strap it between the pack and the lid. Just don’t put anything heavy up there—it can throw off your balance.
Heavy = Close to your back
Light = Toward the outside or top
